Student Lucy Fraser on training youngsters through their Duke of Edinburgh Award, becoming a Mountain Leader, and playing the drums
Tell us about yourselfMy name's Lucy Fraser and I'm 21 years old. I currently live in Canterbury, but I grew up in Bethersden, a lovely little village where my family have lived for generations. Although I'm an only child, my family is quite close, so I have good relationships with my cousins instead.
What are your ambitions?Where to start with that question! After I finish university, I want to go travelling, maybe teaching English abroad for a while. I'd like to continue working for the Youth Service, especially within Duke of Edinburgh. I'm currently working towards my Mountain Leader qualification, so I will help with that. I would also like to do a Masters, but infortuantely I need to save up for that first! What are you doing now?I'm in my third year at Canterbury Christ Church University studying Film, Radio and Television. I also work at Ashford Open Award Centre, where I do training and expedition for the Duke of Edinburgh's Award. Although the Gold expeditions take the most time to prepare, they are what I look forward to the most!
What's the best thing about Kent? That nothing is ever that far away, be it town (particularly London), countryside, the beach, or even abroad. I love the fact I can get on a train in Ashford and be in Paris two hours later!
What are your hobbies?I like to be busy and enjoy organising activities and trips to fill any free time that I get. I enjoy hiking, swimming, playing the drums and doing gigs with my band, but my favourite is cycling. When I have to do something less active, I love to read. And eat... a lot! I'm not greedy, I just know how to work up an appetite!
What was the last book you read? The last book was Sick Puppy by Karl Hiaasen, a black comedy. I'm now reading Skin Privilege by Karin Slaughter. She's my favourite author, her books are so gripping. I do tend to go for crime books, but will try read most things - except romance!
