In recent months, team Surrey Life has been busy speaking to our contributors and industry experts from around the county to get a feel for just who makes Surrey tick
Angus Stovold
The Stovold family at Shackleford, one of the oldest farming dynasties in Surrey, has developed their Aberdeen Angus herd primarily as prize-winning pedigree breeding stock to sell on to farmers around the world. Angus Stovold, 49, heads the latest generation to maintain the family’s farming traditions. He was last year’s president of the Aberdeen-Angus Cattle Society.
Laurence Matthews
The Matthews family have been farming in Surrey since 1935 and their farm at Wotton now extends to 3,000 acres of owned and tenanted land. Laurence is chairman of the National Farmers Union (NFU) Combinable Crops Board - a group of working farmers that advise on arable policy and lobbies the government and the EU. He is on the council of the Surrey Agricultural Society and is a steward at ploughing matches and the Surrey County Show. He is also a founding member of Surrey Quality Producers Group.
Mark Lebus
The founder of LC Energy Ltd, Mark Lebus has developed his woodland based industry into the largest renewable energy business in the region, including supplying the new Energy Centre at Heathrow Airport. Mark is also a board member of the UK Wood Fuels Suppliers Group and a director of the Surrey Hills Enterprise Board.
