Brothers Liam and Matthew Sutton on their golfing dreams, football and adventure stories

Tell us about yourselves

Our names are Liam, 14 (I'm in the blue shirt), and Matthew Sutton, 12. We live in Boughton Lees, a village just outside of Ashford, with our parents, two cats and three goldfish. We both went to Lady Joanna Thornhill Primary School in Wye and are currently at Simon Langton Grammar School for Boys in Canterbury.

What are you doing now?

Apart from school (I'm just beginning my GCSE courses and Matthew has enjoyed his first year at secondary), we are both members of Etchinghill Golf Club, where we receive fantastic coaching from the professional, Steve Mitchell. Last year, Etchinghill Juniors won the East Kent League - the first time the club has won it - as well as the Jamboree, which was held at Westgate and Birchington.

We also both belong to Littlestone Golf Club, where we go for our winter training with Andrew Jones, and most recently Eastwell Manor have offered us the use of their facilities for practice. This has been great, because it's only a five-minute walk from our house, so we get to practice nearly every day, and mum and dad get a break from driving us up and down the motorway!

What are your ambitions?

Our ultimate dream is to become professional golfers and go on tour. Dad took us to the driving range at Great Chart one Easter (when I was seven and Matthew was four) and we took to it immediately; we enjoyed it so much that we started having lessons. We both want to improve our handicaps. I currently play off a handicap of seven and am aiming to be off four by the end of this year and playing off scratch by the time I'm 16. Matthew's handicap is 11 at the moment, and he also wants to get to scratch by the time he's 16.

What's the best thing about Kent?

The best thing about living in Kent is living in the country and being able to play golf every day!

What are your other hobbies?

We both like playing football, tennis and listening to music. Matthew plays basketball, too, and I have recently returned from a two-week tour in the USA with the school football team. When I'm not playing golf (which isn't that often!) I also like to play on my drums.

What was the last book you read?

I've just read The Eagles Prey by Simon Scarrow - I enjoy reading adventure books and especially anything about the Romans. Matthew has just finished Martin the Warrior by Brian Jacques. It's all about a mouse trying to take revenge for the death of his father.
