Having last visited in 1986 following the merger of Royal Holloway and Bedford Colleges, The Queen will visit Royal Holloway, University of London next month.

Her Majesty will take part in a special ceremony on Friday March 14, with the Duke of Edinburgh, to recognise the department of music’s exceptionally high quality of research and teaching.

Dating back to the 16th century, Regius Professorships are a rare privilege and only two have been created in the past century.
Awarded by The Queen to mark her Diamond Jubilee, this is the first time the honour has ever been bestowed on a department of music.
“It is a great honour that our department of music has been given such world-class recognition, confirming its position as one of the best in the country,” says Professor Paul Layzell, principal of Royal Holloway.
Professor Julian Johnson, the first Regius Professor of Music, was head of the department of music from 2010 to 2013.
He has published widely on Viennese modernism and is committed to furthering the public’s understanding of music, giving frequent talks for the Royal Opera House, Glyndebourne Opera, the Philharmonia Orchestra, the London Sinfonietta, and on BBC Radio 3 and BBC TV.

Royal Holloway has a long history of royal connections, dating back to 1886 when Queen Victoria presided over the grand opening ceremony of The Royal Holloway College.
Queen Elizabeth II last visited in 1986 to inaugurate the Royal Holloway and Bedford New College following the merger of Royal Holloway and Bedford Colleges. During that visit, The Queen opened the new Earth Sciences Building.
