Around 500 women hit the streets of Derby to raise around £43,000 in sponsorship towards helping Treetops Hospice at Risley provide palliative care for more people in their own home in their final days Photography: Keeping it Neil
The Moonlight Walk started at 10pm to coincide with the time a Treetops Hospice nurse starts their shift. Just two of the 500 to walk were Lesley Stevens from Findern, Derby, who was walking in memory of her husband Michael who died in July last year, and Michelle Woodin from Riddings who took part in memory of her father, Derek Clarke, and was joined by a group of 14 work colleagues from Riddings Infant and Nursery School.
The 10km Moonlight Walk started at Derby Rugby Club and took in parts of the city centre, including the Cathedral Quarter and Market Place before looping North through Five Lamps, The Broadway and Allestree. There was also a 5k option finishing at Jury’s Inn Hotel. Walk organiser, Gay Evans, said: ‘It has been a fantastic night. There was a great atmosphere before the walk started with several groups dressed up in tutus or as bumble bees to match the yellow t-shirts. Every penny raised tonight is so important to Treetops; we could not provide our services without the fantastic support we receive every year through the Moonlight Walk.
