There’s a new love triangle in town; you, the love of your life and a ball of fur on four legs. Introducing our new monthly feature - Pet Life!
There’s a new love triangle in town; you, the love of your life and a ball of fur on four legs.
According to recent research conducted by a leading pet insurance company, 70 per cent of pet owners in the south east say their pet is equally, if not more, important than other family members.
More than 50 per cent buy luxury products for their pets at least once a month, compared to 19 per cent who confessed they don’t buy gifts for their partners; and 31 per cent obtained a pet because they felt they were a necessary addition to their family.
As a nation of pet lovers, many of us feel if we care for our beloved animals and show them affection, they’ll be loyal and show it back.
But today we are seeing a much less hierarchical distance between parents, partners, children and their pets, the latter often quite literally ruling the roost.
Forty per cent of those surveyed allowed their pet to sleep anywhere they wanted in the home, including on their bed.

Clearly the special relationship we have with our pets is becoming ever closer and more complex. Many pet owners are benefiting more and more from their pets on an emotional level; pets don’t judge us, they are loyal, and forgiving of our faults.
The perfect partner perhaps? These Kent Life readers seem to think so.
Angela and Casper
I’m Angela Smith, I live in Pegwell near Ramsgate and I’m Kent Life and Kent on Sunday’s Advertisement Manager
Casper is a Schnoodle, a cross between a miniature poodle and miniature schnauzer. I have had Casper since he was just eight weeks old – he’s three now and quite simply uber cute. He loves a snug, loves to play and for a small dog he has a massive personality. He sleeps on his back like an otter and I just love him.
Abbi and Tess
I’m Abbi Meekins, 12, I live in East Malling and am in Year Seven at Kent College Pembury.
My dog Tess is a border collie and she’s 15 months old. We’ve had her for a year.
Tess is special because she’s one in a million and also the most affectionate dog you will ever meet. She’s even been featured on Pick TV.
Izzy and Buffy
I’m Izzy Meekins and I live in East Malling. My Jackahuahua is called Buffy, she’s 18 months old and I have had her just over a year.
Buffy is special because she is cheeky, cute, loving, silly and a really big character.
Like my sister’s dog Tess, she has been on Sky’s Pick TV with me in an advert which is on for two years.
Monika and Yoshi
I’m Monika Hawkins, I live in Whitstable with my husband Paul and our children Mia 13, Max 8 and Katy 11. I work as an Account Manager for Archant Kent.
We got Yoshi two years ago for Mia for Christmas. She had originally wanted a hamster but I’ve always wanted a chinchilla, so it was a great excuse to get him! They also live much longer too, around 15 years.
He was hard work at first but with handling and TLC he became tame fairly quickly. Yoshi loves his regular food along with treats like broccoli, but the stalks from bunches of grapes are his favourite.
He has a daily sand bath, which mostly ends up on the kitchen floor, and he can squeeze into very small gaps, so you have to keep an eye on him when roaming free as he’s also partial to chewing wires.
When we first brought him home he escaped and disappeared behind the kitchen units and we literally spent all night trying to get him out. Needless to say, we have now closed all the gaps around the kitchen.
Yoshi is special because of his feisty character and he just looks so adorably cute. Not the best pet if you want to cuddle loads as he’s very fidgety, but he’s fascinating to watch.
I don’t know anyone else who has a chinchilla so he’s pretty unique too. n
