Castle Hill near Almondbury is one of the great Yorkshire landmarks, Victoria Tower that sits at the top of the hill was built to mark Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1897, the tower stands 106ft high which means the summit is 1,000ft above sea level.
The views from the top are extensive, taking in Farnley Tyas and Emley Moor, it’s easy to see why this landscape was chosen to house the television mast to cover this part of West Yorkshire, in more primitive times it proved a valuable strategic point for various settlements of people.
The area has always been known for being a great walking spot due to its close proximity to Huddersfield, but in recent times kite flying has become a popular pastime, and to make that easier overhead power cables were taken down and laid underground in 2006. Good news for photographers looking to take snaps of the unspoilt countryside.
