An historic city with plenty of waterways and greenery close by.
Ripon may be one of the smallest cities in the country, but there’s plenty packed into this historic part of North Yorkshire.
The most famous landmark in Ripon is the stunning cathedral which contains a tomb said to contain the bones of Saint Wilfrid who founded a monastery here and with it the town in the 7th century.
The narrow streets and the market square are a treasure trove of history and well worth exploring, and there are also a number of waterside walks close to the Ure and Skell rivers and the Ripon Canal.
Ripon has plenty of gardens and gardens in its surrounding areas for horticulturalists to visit, there’s the Workhouse Museum & Gardens, The Himalayan Garden & Sculpture Park just eight miles north in Grewelthorpe and Hackfall Woods all within a ten mile radius.
However the most famous of them all is Studley Royal Park and Fountains Abbey, one of two UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Yorkshire, the other being Saltaire.
