Our readers share their photos of the ‘Gateway to the Dales’

This historic market town is familiar to those travelling north from Lancashire and West Yorkshire, and is usually on the itinerary for those staying in the southern part of the Yorkshire Dales.

The 11th century Skipton Castle, is one of the best preserved medieval castles in Britain and is fascinating to explore. The watch tower, built to give the incumbents the earliest warning of attack, now gives visitors great views across the town and the impressive surrounding countryside.

The 36-acre Skipton Castle Woods, will give you plenty of opportunities to take fantastic nature shots and there are many streams and becks for you to spot wildlife.

The Leeds-Liverpool Canal snakes through the centre of Skipton and was a major part of the town’s involvement in the Industrial Revolution, although these days it services the many canal boats and barges rather than the mills that are now mostly gone.

The narrow streets and cobbled lanes of Skipton are evocative of an earlier age and many buildings have retained the olde worlde charm.

Why don’t you upload your Skipton photos to the reader photo gallery? We pick the best ones each month to go in the magazine.
