The elevated, craggy cliffs make Staithes a great place for exploring and taking in the amazing views.
With its huddled cottages, winding cobbled streets, towering cliffs and choppy sea, Staithes is popular for those interested in fine art, geology and getting back to nature.
Staithes was once an important fishing base, home to locally built boats and a small fleet of brightly coloured Whitby Cobles. Now, the boats are used by local fishermen to catch cod, lobsters and crabs.
The tiny beach and cluster of rock pools make this a perfect place to explore, and there are so many fossils that this area that it has been nicknamed the ‘Dinosaur Coast’.
After finishing your exploring, you’ll have definitely worked up an appetite and there are many places to choose from. The Cod & Lobster is a long-established favourite of the village which offers traditional pub food incorporating local produce including freshly-caught cod and delicious crab sandwiches. The pub is as close to the sea as you can get – the waves have tickled the bar on occasion, but the Cod & Lobster stands firm and if you visit for an evening meal, you might be lucky enough to catch a full moon casting a spectacular blue light over the bay.
