The Shambles is one of the most famous landmarks of the historic city of York

Everyone has their favourite place to visit in York, for many it’s the famous York Minster, one of the largest of its kind in Northern Europe and a place that can provide you with a new experience each time you visit.

For others, it’s the iconic York Walls that span over 3 kilometres. Over 2.5 million walk the walls every year, and there’s plenty to see on your journey, the imposing bars or gateways that guarded the city in past times to around 45 towers that are located around the city. However, the most popular place for tourists in the city are the Shambles.

The Shambles just one street in the heart of this maze of twisting, narrow lanes but has become name for the area in general.

The Shambles was a street of butchers’ shops and houses and walking around the busy walkways takes you back to this era. In modern times, it has become home to some great independent foodies.

The Shambles Market is still here, but a more recent addition is the world street food court which has added a more cosmoploitan aspect to this historic city.
