Head to the west of the Lake District to escape the crowds and witness some stunning scenery.
Eskdale is one the hidden gems of the Lake District, it’s an area full of natural beauty yet often overlooked by the millions of visitors to the national park every year.
One reason could be that in a region that is named after lakes, this particular area does not have one. Wastwater lies just to the north and the River Esk does snake through this valley to its estuary at Ravenglass on the coast.
When it comes to peaks, this area is surrounded by some of the major summits in the Lake District, Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England, lies to the north west, Harter Fell to the west and the Old Man of Coniston is not far away to the South.
Most of you will know Eskdale for the two famous features in Hardnott, the Hardknott Pass links Eskdale and the Duddon Valley, while the Roman Fort with an altitude of 800 feet gives you fantastic views of the River Esk in both upper and lower Eskdale.
