Don’t pass by Kendal on the way to the Lakes, there are many reasons to spend some time here.
Anyone who has ever visited the Lake District may well have passed through Kendal on their way to exploring the national park.
It lies close to the m6 motorway and its single platform train station has made it a busy hub for tourists, it’s plain to see why it has gained a reputation as a gateway to the Lakes over the years.
The ‘Grey Auld Town’, named due to the significant amount of building built in native limestone is a legitimate visitor destination in its own right, there are many things to do and see here.
You can explore the market town and take in all ten bridges that traverse the River Kent, or you can visit the collection of independent shops or visit a number of high quality eateries, and of course try the mint cake.
Kendal has also established itself as a centre for the arts over the years, with many creative schemes and art centres in the town.
It’s full of history too, Kendal Museum is one of the oldest in the country and the castle, just a few miles out of town, dates back to the medieval era, the views from the castle toward Kendal are perfect for taking photos, as are the views towards the Lake District on the horizon.
