These are the photographs which have taken the prizes in our competition. Our panel of judges faced a tough task in choosing the best shots from the entries submitted to our annual search for the county’s best amateur photographer.

Hundreds of brilliant pictures taken all over the county were submitted for the competition which is sponsored by Wilkinsons Cameras.

After careful deliberation the judging panel – led by David Parkinson from Wilkinsons, Cheshire Life editor Louise Allen-Taylor and picture editor John Cocks selected a shortlist which will appear in the 2014 Cheshire Life calendar.

They then chose the top three and this year’s first prize of a Nikon D3200 and AF-S 18-55 VR worth £445, went to Darren Moston from Warrington for his shot of a bird among blossom.

Cheshire Life’s picture editor John Cocks said: ‘Wildlife is very difficult to photograph well because it has a habit of moving but Darren has not only captured his subject, he has been able to compose his shot very well too.

‘It was a very difficult job to choose just three from the hundreds of pictures that were entered for this year’s competition but in the end Darren was a very worthy winner.’

Second prize went to John Varley from Stockport. He won the £400 Nikon 1 J2 and 10-30mm White for his picture of Gawsworth reflected in the pond. The judges selected Keith Meredith, also from Stockport, to win the third prize of a Nikon Coolpix S9300 Red, worth £200, for his shot of an old boat house at Poynton Pool.
