Ashbourne Royal Shrovetide

February 13-14

Played every Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday for hundreds of years, since at least 1667, this dramatic and famous game is thought to be one of the oldest forms of football in the world. Unlike a conventional football match, Shrovetide Football is played over two eight-hour periods, the goals are three miles apart and there are very few rules.
