Reidys Home of Music give their expert advice on picking the right guitar

With just a quick look through popular music within the last 80 years or so, there’s no denying the prominence of the guitar, both electric and acoustic.

Whether you’re after an instrument to recreate that post-Depression dustbowl ballad sound, a modern rock sound, or indeed anything in between the choices can be overwhelming.

Some of the new guitars arriving in recently have been the source of some excitement on behalf of the staff here at Reidys, for example, the new Gibson Les Paul Slash Vermillion model. This guitar features a carved solid Grade-AAA figured maple top, Seymour Duncan Slash signature pickups, a hard shell Gibson case with Slash artwork, and is strictly limited to 1200 globally. This guitar feels and looks and sounds as fantastic as you would expect any Gibson Les Paul to, and is perfect not only for fans of the top-hatted legend, but also for anyone serious about playing rock and blues guitar. Of course, we carry a range of Les Pauls that suit experts and beginners alike and start at only £119.

Sticking with signature models, the Martin Ed Sheeran LX1E offers a great playing and great sounding guitar with a solid sapele top and Fishman pickup ideal for anyone wanting to recreate the sound made

famous by the young singer-songwriter, or someone seeking a decent, reliable guitar that is small enough to travel around with. Also, a percentage of the profits of this guitar are donated to the East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices.

Another handy travel-sized guitar that has more than proven its worth over the last couple of years is the Taylor GS Mini. A particular favourite of some of the staff in store, the GS Mini is available in a variety of wood finishes and is available with or without a pickup. These guitars offer a rich, full, sound and, like the Little Martins, are great for travelling musicians.

Starter packs are always a good option for a gift; the Fender CD-60 Pack and the Fender Strat Packs being two of our most popular. These packs include everything you need to get started playing acoustic or electric guitar and offer fantastic quality at a low price. On the other end of the spectrum, the high end Gibson, Gretsch, Fender, PRS, Martin, Taylor and Rickenbacker guitars are worth considering for those with a bigger budget.
