Love Somerset, Love Nature – that’s the message Somerset Wildlife Trust is asking local people to get behind as it celebrates its golden anniversary year – and these stunning images capture just that

From the woods and valleys of the Quantock and Mendip Hills to the low lying wetlands of the Levels and Moors, Somerset’s diversity of habitats are home to an array of birds, mammals, insects and plants.

These 12 beautiful images are the winning entries in the trust’s photographic competition and will be featured in its popular Wild Somerset calendar for 2015.

The overall winning entry is Reed bunting in snow by Victoria Hillman, with Rabbit in the buttercups by Robin Morrison and Ball Hill by John Samuels highly commended.

Trust president, TV producer, author and naturalist Stephen Moss, joined the trust’s team to judge the competition.

Stephen said: “The reed bunting is a lovely portrait of this shy little wetland bird, embedded in its reed bed habitat. Ball Hill is a very evocative winter scene; an unusual but effective composition and the rabbit in the buttercups is a lovely picture redolent of summer days.”

The 12 calendar images are online now and people are being invited to vote for their favourite in The People’s Choice. Visit somersetwildlife.org/50
