‘I love being out in nature,’ says wildlife and landscape artist Jonathan Pomroy. ‘I am passionate about the natural world and painting is my way of expressing that. I live and breathe natural history and my enthusiasm for it hopefully comes across in my paintings.’

Jonathan, who lives in Ampleforth in North Yorkshire, spends a great deal of his time out in the field, filling sketchbooks and photographing. ‘I’m inspired by this area,’ says the Berkshire-born artist, ‘because there’s so much variety. One day I could be sketching puffins at Bempton Cliffs, the next red grouse on the moors.

‘I place great importance on observing wildlife and landscape on location and keep extensive sketchbooks packed with ideas for compositions; all of my paintings are a result of observation made in the field. I have found sketching to be the most enjoyable part of being an artist - there is great excitement from spending time close to wildlife and inevitably this brings some fascinating insights into the behaviour of many species.’

Working out in the field, he says, gives his work the kind of fluidity and immediacy that conveys constant movement of the birds and creatures which feature in his paintings. Jonathan is constantly observing the weather (he is married to a meteorologist), watching the effect it has on the landscape.

Jonathan has exhibited his work all over Britain and after a career spanning 20 years, is now regarded as one of the country’s foremost wildlife artists. He has exhibited at the Mall Galleries in London as well as at Christies and Bonhams and in Norfolk, Stockbridge, Hawes and Arundel. He enjoys a loyal following of collectors and often works to commission. He was recently commissioned by the Wildlife Habitat Conservation Stamp Trust to design a stamp and prints to be launched at the CLA Game Fair in July 2013.
