A recent find by a Cotswold electrician who was renovating a house soon brought a smile to the finder's face when it was valued by Cotswold Auction Company Director Liz Poole.
A recent find by a Cotswold electrician who was renovating a house soon brought a smile to the finder's face when it was valued by Cotswold Auction Company Director Liz Poole.
After investigation it was discovered to be the work of an early 20th century avant-garde artist by the name of Adrian Paul Allison (1890-1959). Allison was born in London in 1890 and was the son of a miller and exponent of alternative medicine. He was educated at the Slade School of Fine Art, 1910-1912 and also in Munich and Paris circa 1913. During his studies Allison worked alongside International artists such as Christopher Nevinson and Stanley Spencer under Professor Tonks. He received acclaim for his technical excellence and individuality, exhibiting with the London group between the wars in 1914. Other members included Sickert and Pissarro. During the first world war he drew characters for the Daily Express and later his work was commissioned for British Railway posters.
The painting has been assigned for the Cotswold Auction Company's Modern Art and Design Auction on July 7 at their Chapel Walk Saleroom, Cheltenham and is expected to create much interest, carrying an estimate of �600-�1,000.
The painting, an oil on board, which was discovered in a shed during the property restoration, was found standing on its side and has some slight water damage to one edge. Despite this, it is an extremely vibrant and colourful view of the market in Munich and is thought to have been painted when Allison studied there.
