Calling all Kent artists

The Historic Dockyard Chatham is inviting all artists, professional or amateur, aged 18+ who live, work or study in Kent to enter it s Art In The Dockyard art competition. You must register before 21 August to potentially see your art work exhibited in the new No.1 Smithery Gallery which opened in July.

The programme hopes to find outstanding and inspirational artists who will capture the spirit and extraordinary character of The Historic Dockyard, under any of the seven categories including: landscapes, figurative, abstract, photographic, sculptural/ceramic, mixed media (including textiles) and 2D artworks of the Commissioner’s House (oil/acrylic/watercolour/pen and wash only).

Registered artists will need to submit their final artworks, digital image or slides to the competition by 10 January 2011. Those successfully selected at this first stage will go on to exhibit in the public Art In The Dockyard Art Exhibition from 14 February – 31 March 2011 in the new contemporary art gallery.

Once exhibited, an independent panel of judges will be awarding prizes in each category and presenting the overall Artist of The Dockyard 2011 title and prize.

Artists are being requested to register their interest in this competition now, by completing and sending in the official registration form, which can be downloaded from www.thedockyard.co.uk or requested on 01634 823843.

There is a 15 registration fee, which will provide the artist with unlimited access for three months to The Historic Dockyard (this does not include entry into the galleries) to gather research and ideas for their creative works.

The Historic Dockyard Chatham has also programmed a range of one-day art Masterclasses lead by specialists in watercolours, photography and textiles, to offer support and inspiration to anyone who would like to either take part in the competition or just be creative for the day.

Take a Fresh Look Masterclasses run throughout September and cost 50.

Details can be found on the dockyard’s website.
