What luck! Our reviewer is snowed in at the Castle Green Hotel, Kendal
REVIEW BY ALEX LEIGH

When Living Edge invited me to review the Castle Green Hotel in Kendal, I had images in my mind of wrapping up warm and going for long walks along the lakes, popping out to a country pub for a hot toddy by the fire, you get the picture…

What I didn’t bank on was being stuck in the worst snow the country has ever seen and not being able to make it past the end of the hotel’s drive.

Luckily for my husband and I, Castle Green has fantastic facilities including a huge swimming pool, gym and spa, is modern, comfortable and has a fine dining restaurant or a pub you can eat in. What more do you need? The snow just meant that the stunning scenery looked even more beautiful – we felt as though we had arrived in Narnia!

On our first night, we had the five-course taster menu at the Greenhouse restaurant, which is serious about modern British cuisine and has won prestigious awards. Everything we ate was sourced no more than 55 miles from their kitchen door and included all kinds of exciting gems such as smoked trout, various styles of pork, Cumbrian cheeses and my personal favourite, gingerbread and butter pudding and Kendal mint parfait - heaven on a plate. The service and stunning presentation of every dish was impressive.

The next morning, after a delicious breakfast I was treated to a back, neck and shoulder massage. The therapist used Aromatherapy Associates products which are heavenly and my only problem with the massage is that it ended! I won’t be making the same mistake on my next visit – I am booking in for the works. Afterwards I met my husband in the indoor, heated pool and then we relaxed in the steam room. If I wasn’t in the lazy holiday mood then the gym was well-equipped and had a wide range of classes to choose from.

With Kendal and its attractions including the wonderful Abbot Hall Art Gallery, Sizergh Castle or the Lakeland Maize Maze a stone’s throw away, whether it’s a cultural holiday you are after, or if you are a nature lover or simply want to relax like we did, then the Castle Green Hotel fits the bill perfectly.
