For the past 20 years, Cheam-based artist Peter Newsome has devoted his energies to the creation of glass sculptures with works exhibited widely in the UK and in New York.
Formerly a scientist, he now uses the traditional skills of the glazier and glassworker and hand-cuts and shapes component pieces of sheet glass to create beautiful and distinctive sculptures.
“I became interested in the versatility of glass in my former career as a bio-chemist and took early retirement to explore it as an art form,” says Peter. “There is a wonderful interaction of light and form found in glass and I love the way the two change as you move around a sculpture.”
Peter uses high-quality glass engineering resins to bond and laminate his work, incorporating industrially toughened and stainless steel components so that he can work at almost any scale.
“Many people think of glass as fragile,” he says, “but by building my sculptures in layers they are very substantial.”
An associate of the Royal British Society of Sculptors, Peter often exhibits at the Mine Gallery in Carshalton and featured at London’s Mall Galleries in the highly regarded Royal Society of British Artists’ Annual Exhibition at the start of March.
