Special Tea Party at Mellor and Townscliffe Golf Club
THERE are around seven young people, aged between 13-24, who are diagnosed with cancer every day in the UK. The Teenage Cancer Trust which supports these young people held a very special Tea Party at Mellor and Townscliffe Golf Club and it raised an amazing £2,280 for this very worthy cause.
There were many generous donations for the raffle and the clubhouse was packed with people keen to support the charity. Lindsay Stead, who is currently undergoing treatment for cancer at The Christie Hospital, was pleased to be able to hand over the cheque to Sabina Ruta, the North West Area Fundraising co-ordinator.
Lindsay will also be taking part in a special fundraising ‘Runway on the Runway’ under the wingspan of Concorde at Manchester Airport on March 31 – which is Manchester’s most sparkling, glitzy fashion event of 2017.
Peter looking forward to a great year at Prestbury
PRESTBURY Golf Club’s new Captain Peter Atherton (pictured) said: “It looks like being an outstanding year ahead at Prestbury for in my 17 years at the club the course has never looked or played better thanks to head green keeper Mark Crossley and his team who are doing a fine job.
“My own personal highlight was standing on the 16th tee at Prestbury in a major competition at one over par gross and finishing par, par birdie win the competition on a cpo and drop my handicap to five which had been a target for a few years – it is now seven.
“My favourite hole at Prestbury is the third – it is a challenging drive – either take on the bunker and try to hit a little draw or hit a three wood and then have a longer shot to the elevated green which must be hit perfectly to land and stay on the green. “I think that many club golfers could learn a lot from watching lady pro golfers in action so I would love to play a mixed four ball with Ian Poulter (love the passion he has for the game) and two leading lady professionals like Suzann Pettersen and Michelle Wie.”
Abbie enjoying the new challenges
REDDISH Vale assistant professional Abbie Cowlard is now well into the second year of her PGA qualification and she is finding it very enjoyable with lots of new responsibilities. Abbie, who finished her amateur career as the Cheshire Ladies champion, said: “This year I have spent time teaching the juniors at Reddish Vale and it has been very exciting to see so many talented youngsters.
“My highlight was passing the first part of my Level Two coaching which makes me qualified to teach all players from beginners to full-time golfers. I am looking forward to my future in golf and I will be working hard on my game trying to make it to the top level and also progressing with my coaching as I love being able to help new people into golf and coaching those who want to improve their game.
”I would like to thanks my boss Andrew Myers for his guidance and the opportunity he has given me and also my parents Jean and Ian and my grandma Sheila who have been very supportive.”
