Macc juniors win top trophy
MACCLESFIELD Golf Club junior team have enjoyed a great season and capped it by reaching two of the Derbyshire and Cheshire Junior League finals.
The first was the Knock Out final played at Hazel Grove against Cavendish GC and it proved to an exciting contest, played in great spirit, with all of the players enjoying themselves and having good fun in ideal playing conditions.
Three of the matches went to the final hole but Cavendish emerged as the winners. The Macc team put this defeat behind them as a few days later they played the gross final at the neutral venue of davenport against Mellor and Townscliffe.
The team of Ollie Tovee, Tom Hollingworth, Tom Silcock, Simon Montalvo and Tom Kirton pulled off a great result to bring the coveted trophy back to Macc..
Royal Oak are the Pub Champs
THE Pub Championship staged at Mellor and Townscliffe Golf Club has gone from strength to strength over the years.
There was another full house for the 2016 competition with all of the players enjoying a superb course, good weather and excellent organisation and hospitality both on and off the course.
The Royal Oak 2 were clear winners as the fab four of Les Ross, Ian Appleton, Graham Davenport and Phil McPherson racked up an impressive 93 points.
It left them clear of Royal Oak 1 who had Rob Davies, Paul Wilkinson, Stuart Jones and Danny posting 91 points, one more than Platform One with Dan Troughear, Alan Little, Simon Ratcliffe and Steve Rawlings providing their score. Also in the prizes were Marple CC who won a cpo on 89 points from The British Queen.
Great win for Styal duo as the make history for their club
THE finals day for the Manchester Past Lady Captains was a very relaxed affair, blessed by superb weather at North Manchester Golf Club, the home club of the Past Captain’s Captain Margaret Ashworth.
In the final were Styal’s Aileen Holohan and Claire Whitney Michelle Baines and Barbara Hudson of Ashton-under-Lyne. Marking for the Styal pair were Sophie Casey and Yvonne Chadwick of Sale and the Ashton duo were accompanied by MDLGA President Chris Kelly of Bramhall and Lynda Skilton.
It was a memorable day for Chris who holed her tee shot on the par three 18th for a well celebrated ace for which she received a bottle of champagne. After the final Margaret hosted an excellent buffet lunch for the players, committee and guests from North Manchester- Lady President Pat Chadwick and Lady Captain Doreen Hallam.
The trophy winners were Aileen and Claire with a fine score of 37 points with Michele and Barbara posting 30.
Girls Golf Rocks at Prestbury
THE England Golf project –‘Girls Golf Rocks’ – is an initiative from England Golf with the project aiming to increase the numbers of girls participating in golf.
It has been trialled with success at several clubs in East Cheshire with success and Prestbury Golf Club’s PGA professional Mark Pilling, who is also a County Academy coach and a Cheshire playing legend, led a Girls Golf Rocks taster session at his club.
Mark said: “It was a great day and we had several Cheshire girls helping out on the day, including Prestbury’s England Girls star Bel Wardle, and they were able to provide plenty of help and inspiration.
“There were 11 new players taking part in the session and the large majority signed up for a ten-week coaching programme which includes going out on the golf course. “The girls will then be offered membership to the club which is hopefully the start of their journey into a new sport.”
