Ewan shines at Wilmslow
THE Wilmslow Golf Club Junior Open was again a great success attracting players from as far away as Scotland and the Midlands to enjoy their fabulous course blessed by good weather.
There was some excellent scoring led in by Ewan Holt (Stockport GC) with an outstanding nett 63 putting him clear of Edward Reed (Royal Birkdale )67 and Hayat Leung (Heswall) 71.
The best gross of 72 came from Sam Long (Delamere Forest) with 72 and Wilmslow Junior Captain Hywel Shaw had the leading over 15 years nett score of 68 followed by Will Lucas (Styal) 70 and MacKenzie Terry (Wilmslow) 72. The top girl was nine-year-old Mia Sepe of Wolstanton Golf Club with 74.
Great junior competition at Ringway
The annual Ringway Junior Open, which was also a qualifier for the Daily Telegraph Junior Golf Championship, attracted a fine entry of over 40 players from around the region and saw some fine golf played over an excellent course. There were three main trophies on offer with the Fred Heap memorial Trophy being shared with 70 by Henry Brogan (Lymm GC), Joshua Donaghey (Ringway) and Ben Lee (Ringway).
Ringway junior organiser Isobel Parry said: “Despite competing with a junior county match between Cheshire and Lancashire just down the road at Hale GC we had 42 entrants- including eight girls which was great with two sets of sisters Holly and Sophie Lee (Vicars Cross) and Jessica and Victoria Turner (Sandiway)- with handicaps ranging from scratch to 31.
“The boys and girls compete for the Heap Salver (gross) which was won by Matt Gardner (Prestbury) 75 from Josh Curtis (Ringway) 77 and James Kempster (Stamford) 78 and the Tom Harrison Scratch Trophy is just for girls and was won by Victoria Turner with 85.
Rhys wins another thriller at Delamere Forest
Cheshire Junior Captain Rhys Nevin-Wharton will soon be off to the USA to begin a four-year golf scholarship after a distinguished and successful career to date with Cheshire and England.
His final attempt to win the Cheshire Boys Championship at the traditional venue of Delamere Forest looked to be very doubtful after a scrappy first round of 77 saw him trail the leaders James Ashfield (Eaton) 71 and Archie Palmer (Bramhall) and James Kempster (Bramhall) both 72.
But as the clouds parted to produce much better weather for the second round Rhys blossomed in the sun with a string of birdies giving him a best-of-the-day 67 over a very challenging Forest course. It was enough to take him across the line into top spot, with a birdie on the 18th with a total of 144 from James Ashfield 145, Archie Palmer 146 and Luke Donnelly (Ashton-under-Lyne) and James Kempster, both 147.
