Cheshire Life picture editor John Cocks knows a good picture when he sees one – he’s been taking them for the magazine for more than 30 years after all – but choosing just three from the hundreds sent in for our annual competition is no easy task.

‘It’s very difficult indeed,’ he said in a break from sifting through the entries. ‘Some wonderful pictures will have to be left off the shortlist because the overall standard is so high. What is particularly pleasing this year is that there is a real variety of shots.

‘Readers have not just been all over the county with their cameras but they have obviously been thinking about how they can make their picture stand out from the rest and how they can find a different angle or make the best use of the light.’

John is joined on the judging panel by Cheshire Life editor Louise Taylor and David Parkinson from Wilkinson’s Cameras and the 12 shortlisted photographs they select will be considered for use in next year’s Cheshire Life calendar.

Once they have agreed on the shortlist, they will set about the even more difficult task of selecting a top three who will win wonderful prizes provided by competition sponsors Wilkinson’s Cameras.
