Lancashire Life is way ahead of the field when it comes to choosing a quality county magazine but we usually rely on readers and advertisers to give us a little help picking the winners at Haydock.

Our annual race meeting is now established in the racing calendar and the day was bathed in brilliant sunshine. Our guests had a terrific time, enjoying a champagne reception before a lunch of smoked salmon risotto cake, supreme of chicken with a tomato and chive mousse, topped off with a classic berry tart. It was a particularly special day for Chris and Bill North, from Ashton-in-Makerfield, who were celebrating their ruby wedding anniversary. Advertising manager Lindsey Stephens presented them with a celebration cake.

Guests were escorted to the Lancashire Life box to watch a day of racing, with the Lancashire Life Maiden Stakes the highpoint of the afternoon. Shaisee won the prize for the best turned out horse but the first home was the favourite, Desert Revolution, owned by Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Al Maktoum.
