A 17th century portrait of the Duchess of Richmond at Goodwood House is one of the key artworks being auctioned at a Fine Paintings sale being held at John Nicholson’s Fine Art Auctioneers and Valuers on Wednesday 24th September.
The oil painting of Anne Brudenell is attributed to the French artist, Charles D’Agar (1669-1723), who painted it in the likeness of a portrait of the Duchess by Godfrey Kneller which is part of the Goodwood House collection. Anne Brudenell was married to the 1st Duke of Richmond, Charles Lennox. Goodwood House has been the home of the Dukes of Richmond and Lennox for over 300 years. The 1st Duke was the natural son of King Charles II and his French mistress, Louise de Keroualle; he originally bought the magnificent Goodwood House as a hunting lodge. The portrait is estimated at £2,000-£4,000.
Also featured in the auction is a scene of The Old School, Byworth, Petworth, Sussex entitled ‘The Field Beyond’ by contemporary British artist John Hitchens (1940- ).

A watercolour by the renowned Victorian artist, Helen Allingham, who also has strong links with West Sussex, is featured in the sale. Allingham is most famous for her depictions of traditional architecture, notably old thatched cottages and farmhouses, many in Blackdown and Roundhurst, West Sussex. However, the two paintings being auctioned at the sale, ‘Waiting for Mother’ and ‘The Six Bells’ are set in the neighbouring counties of Surrey and Kent. Many of Allingham’s paintings are of historical significance; most of the structures she depicted were on the verge of being demolished as the Victorian railways cut swathes through the countryside of the home counties. ‘The Six Bells’ inn in Hollingbourne, Kent, was demolished shortly after she captured it on canvas.
Other British artists featured are Fred Yates (1922-2008). Three of his works will be falling under the hammer. One of them, ‘Tea and Coffee,’ is estimated at £400-£600.
A pair of oil on canvas paintings by Frederick Calvert (c.1785-c.1845), ‘Hauling the Nets, Medway off Chatham Dockyard,’ as well as a companion piece, ‘The Hay Barge,’ are estimated from £3,000-£5,000.
Further from home is a dramatic work by Belgian Hendrik Van Der Hecht (1841-1901), ‘View of the Horseshoe Falls from Goat Island,’ Niagara, which is estimated at £6,000-£8,000.
