The three photographers who scooped the Lancashire Life and Wilkinson Cameras awards

Someone once said that a great photographer makes the ordinary extraordinary. Well, Mark Freeman certainly took a familiar view and turned it into something breathtakingly special.

It was his picture that was the unanimous winner of the competition staged jointly by Lancashire Life and the region’s top independent photographic retailer, Wilkinson Cameras.

We had thousands of entries but Mark’s long exposure, taken from under the South Pier in Blackpool looking towards Central Pier and Blackpool Tower, stood out for the judges.

Mark, who lives in Lytham St. Annes and works as an IT analyst for Glasdon Group Limited in Blackpool, only started taking photography seriously after buying a DSLR in the New Year sales 2009. He also has a Sony Alpha 300 and a beloved wide angle lens.

As winner, Mark picks up a wonderful prize, courtesy of Wilkinson Cameras, the Preston based company which has been supplying photographers for more than 20 years. He receives a Canon EOS 500D & EF-S 18-55mm lens worth a total of 600.

The runners-up are Damian Hock and Ian Bolton.

Damian, of Barrow, took the picture below at South Walney Nature Reserve.

Ian, who lives in Bolton, who took view, at the top of the page, from above Butharlyp Howe, near Grasmere. They each win a Canon Digital Ixus 200IS, worth 230.

Many thanks to all those who submitted pictures. We were overwhelmed by the volume and the quality.

Our three winners now go through to the national Great British Photograph competition with a 5,000 prize from sponsors Land Rover.
