Talented teenagers whose artistic creations impressed judges of the Cheshire Life Young Artist of the Year 2013 competition gathered at Robinsons Brewery Visitor Centre in Stockport to receive their prizes.
The panel of local artists and gallery owners were delighted to declare Lauren Green of Mollington, near Chester, the winner. They were very impressed by the 17-year-old’s striking black and white portrait of a young girl.
Head judge Malcolm Croft, an artist from Bramhall, said: ‘This incredibly fine-detailed ink on paper portrait had the judges puzzled. Could something this good have really been made by hand? We liked everything about this work - the composition, the execution, even the framing was sympathetic.’
The winner and runners-up were presented with commemorative certificates and gift vouchers by Cheshire Life editor Louise Allen-Taylor and one of the judges, Martin Heaps, of Collect Art gallery in Lymm.
Macclesfield-based Jamie Hammill’s portrait was strikingly unusual and won second place. Last year his intricate torso sculpture made him the winner. Malcolm said: ‘Jamie’s portrait was painted on doors. Last year’s winner is clearly as good at painting as he is at sculpture.’ Ryan Brown from Grappenhall won third prize, also with a portrait of a girl’s face. Malcolm said: ‘Ryan’s portrait was very good, a fine piece of hypnotic hyper-realism. We really liked it.’
