Charles Mutter, violinist and distinguished associate leader of the BBC’s Concert Orchestra, will join the renowned Bristol Metropolitan Orchestra (BMO) and conductor William Goodchild, for a memorable evening of classical greats as a ‘one off’ event on Saturday 8 March.
Celebrated guest soloist, Charles Mutter, is due to take centre stage at St George’s, one of the country’s leading concert halls, which boasts superb acoustics and attracts some of the world’s best artists, alongside the popular symphonic-sized Bristol Metropolitan Orchestra.
The concert on Saturday 8 March at 7.30pm will open with Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture, a symphonic poem with depictions of Friar Lawrence, the warring Capulets and Montagues, and the star-crossed lovers. Charles Mutter will join the orchestra to perform Korngold’s romantic Violin Concerto. Perhaps less well-known, this work nevertheless deserves the limelight because of its exciting virtuosity and expressive melodic lines from the composer’s Hollywood film music scores of the 1930s. The evening will conclude with Dvorak’s Eighth Symphony, a cheerfully lyric work inspired by Bohemian folk music.

Additional highlights of Bristol Metropolitan Orchestra’s forthcoming 2014 season include mesmeric London soloist Kwesi Edman, who will perform two works for cello at St George’s in the Orchestra’s summer concert on 5 July. The year will culminate with a performance of Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana on November 15 at Colston Hall. The City of Bristol Choir, with additional choristers from Exultate Singers and Bristol Schools Chamber Choir, will join the Orchestra for this concert, which is in aid of St Peter’s Hospice. The performance has been made possible with additional funding from Ovation Finance.
