Leigh artist Sally Martin and her equine paintings

Artist Sally Martin has a deep respect and love of horses that is evident in her equine paintings. Working from her studio in Leigh, near Reigate, Sally paints mostly in oils, and also explores mixed media.
“I find horses fascinating and endlessly beautiful,” she says. “They continually provide me with inspiration for my work whether they are the loyal riding school pony or a magnificent beast such as Valegro, the double-gold winning horse that I portrayed prior to his success at the 2013 Olympics.”
Sally herself is an experienced rider and has worked as an instructor in the UK and the USA. Following the birth of her daughter, she cut down on the riding and picked up her paints, concentrating on equestrian art. Sally quickly found commissions for her paintings and was delighted when she was accepted by the Society of Equestrian Artists where she twice won their coveted CUNEO award.
“It was so encouraging to get the awards and I have now painted full time for 15 years,” she says. “My interest remains in the connection between horse and rider; the process of training and pursuit of perfection in unity and movement.”
