It’s no surprise these striking designs by Falmouth-based furniture designer Henry Swanzy have been picked up by Heal’s of London
Known for spotting talented furniture designers and their iconic pieces, Heal’s latest find is Falmouth-based Henry Swanzy, who’s striking pieces combine sustainable wood with steel and glass.
Heal’s has a 200-year history of showcasing products from leading designers and brands, including Vitra, Ligne Rosset and Mathew Hilton, as well as a reputation for identifying up and coming talent. Henry, who launched his company at Tent, part of London Design Week, in September 2013, is thrilled to have his striking, elegant designs included in the retailer’s spring/summer 2014 collection.
Henry can be found in his 14,000 sq. ft. workshop at Falmouth Wharves in North Parade. Working largely with sustainably sourced timber and indigenous woods, complemented by auxiliary materials including bamboo, steel and glass, Henry draws on his training as a cabinet maker as well as his time studying for an MA in Design at Falmouth University, marrying fine-furniture making skills with a ‘truth to materials’ ethos, and commitment to sustainable production. The result is honest, simple and elegant pieces. “Essentially I am trying to create an authentic harmony between the natural beauty of the materials and modern design - finely tuned, but not overworked,” he says.
The Pollyfo is a trestle table with hand shaped oak or ash legs; the playful Bareppa coffee table, which uses a bungee to hold three oak legs in place; and the Conker occasional table, inspired by the shape of a sweet chestnut.
“It certainly is a promising start to 2014 and I am looking forward to our launch as part of the Heal’s spring/summer collection,” says Henry, who is also preparing to exhibit at London’s Clerkenwell Design Week in May this year. “It is great to have secured some permanent work space in Falmouth, within such a vibrant artistic community, and I very much look forward to working with Joe.”
