Great British Life:

Wet Auction Saturday 1st October 2016

Great British Life: Wet AuctionWet Auction

Unique opportunity to bid for work made that day by more than forty artists in and around Newlyn and Penzance.

10 am – 5 pm: Artists will be working at locations throughout Newlyn and Penzance (and

sometimes further afield)

7.30 – 10.00pm: Auction of the works at Newlyn Art Gallery

As an innovative fundraiser, Newlyn Art Gallery & The Exchange will be holding the south west’s first

ever Wet Auction on Saturday 1st October. In recognition of Newlyn’s history of plein air’ painting,

artists will be invited to leave their studio, equipped with materials and a packed lunch, and spend a

day working outdoors in Newlyn, Penzance and further afield in Penwith. At the end of the day at

Newlyn Art Gallery, buyers will have the opportunity to bid on the works created that very day,

which may, in some cases, still be wet.

With more than 40 artists taking part this fundraising event should prove to be a fun opportunity for

residents and visitors to spot artists at work in and around the town, as well as at some of our

partner venues including Jubilee Pool, Tremenheere Sculpture Garden, Newlyn Filmhouse, The

Gurnard’s Head, The Old Coastguard and even one artist sailing to the Isles of Scilly and back on the

Scillonian.

The artists confirmed so far include Sam Bassett , Ali Corder, Mary Crocket, Naomi Frears, Anthony

Frost, Catherine Haines, James Hankey, Becky Haughton, Bernard Irwin, John Keys, Jonty Lees,

Michael Porter, Ben Sanderson, Jesse Leroy Smith, Marion Taylor, Shelley Tregonning, Jason Walker,

and Lucy Willow, with more to be confirmed. You can follow their movements via social media using

#wetnewlyn.

By 7.30pm, the works - a spontaneous snapshot of a West Penwith day - will be hung in the upper

gallery ready to be auctioned. The Wet Auction, like the day, will be fast-moving and fun; with

music, food from Little Wonder Café and the Studio Café Bar open.

As well as the opportunity to acquire some very fresh (perhaps even wet) new work, buyers can

enjoy the fact that all proceeds will be matched pound-for-pound by the Catalyst:Evolve scheme,

thereby DOUBLING all funds raised towards the gallery’s programme of support for young artists

from the region.
