Walcott artist Amelia Mills is flying high after landing a first-class commission from flag-carrier British Airways.

Amelia was selected to create a unique artwork for the water-themed edition of the airline’s quarterly in-flight magazine for first class passengers, First, after being discovered through social media where she regularly shows her cutting edge artworks in acrylic and resin.

“The magazine art director got in touch after looking on Instagram,” said Amelia. He was so impressed with the quality of her work that he gave her the commission to design the prestigious cover. “It’s wonderful that social media offers people the chance to have their work discovered,” she said.

“I’ve only been using resin for about a year,” she said. “I was using just acrylic but I felt it lacked dimension when it was wet and lost vibrancy when it dried.”

About a year ago she discovered a Canadian company that made art resin, allowing her to create her striking, almost 3D artworks. Although her art is usually inspired by the natural landscapes and coastal features of her home in Norfolk, Amelia drew inspiration for the BA piece from the mineral-rich glacial waters seen during her recent travels in New Zealand.

Despite having only two weeks to design and complete the artwork, the result was a beautiful painting that captures the flowing movement of water, which will hang in the first class Concorde Club Lounge at Heathrow’s Terminal 5 until the end of June.

The magazine was distributed in BA aircraft from April, with a potential readership of 100,000 passengers during the issue’s three-month period.

“It has been an exciting opportunity to work with a high profile corporation like British Airways,” said Amelia.

A video of her painting the piece can be seen on the British Airways First Magazine app for iPad, which is downloadable from the App Store.
