This striking artwork, which was commissioned by Guildford Borough Council, was designed by sculptor Ian Campbell-Briggs, who studied Fine Art at West Surrey College of Art & Design in the early 1980s.

“My design was inspired by the linear map of the route taken during the Olympic relay from Guildford Cathedral to Stoke Park,” says Ian. “This line has been multiply duplicated, then manipulated through space, to form the topology of a running figure in steel rod.”

Ian initially modelled a life-size figure in plaster, over which he welded each individual steel line, thus acquiring the articulation of the figure. The steel sections were removed from the former cast then welded together creating the figure. Over 400 steel lines form the figure resulting in over 2,000 welds.

“I am delighted that this sculpture provides a lasting reminder of the role that Guildford played in the 2012 Olympic Games,” says Gordon Jackson, lead member for economic development and tourism at Guildford Borough Council. “The Olympic legacy is very much alive in Guildford and both my predecessor, Councillor Jennifer Powell, and I felt that there should be a permanent memorial in Guildford to the 2012 Olympics. This was prompted some time ago after seeing various sculptures by other artists that took up the Olympic theme.”

Entitled Juno, the name of the work comes from the Heraean, an early form of the Olympics dating back to the 6th century BC. The games were dedicated to the Goddess Hera, but Ian chose to use the Latin translation.
