Portloe’s charming centrepiece in the heart of Cornwall’s Roseland Peninsula – celebrates its 65th year as a hotel in 2016. Originally built in 1701, the site began life as an inn but quickly gained a reputation as a real smugglers’ den, specialising in the import of French Brandy. Following its criminal heyday, the property fell into disrepair, before becoming first a pub in 1951, then ultimately adding bedrooms to transform itself into the outstanding bolthole it is known as today.

As its 65th year dawns, The Lugger is in rude health, with 22 beautifully decorated bedrooms, many of which offer spectacular views across the harbour and outwards to the windswept cliffs. Furnished with Portuguese woods and fine linens, rooms are equipped with deluge showers and deep baths, while the restaurant below was recently awarded its second AA Rosette and serves up a mouth-watering selection of locally-sourced Cornish produce.

And there’s plenty to do beyond the confines of the hotel itself, with intrepid travellers urged to explore the numerous cliff-top hikes beginning from Portloe, stretching out to nearby Carne and Portholland along the Roseland Heritage Coast, while families can venture to the nearby Gardens of Heligan, one of England’s most mysterious and romantic estates. A bonafide secret garden, it was lost to the overgrowth for decades but has been lovingly restored to its former glory, and can be easily reached just 8 miles from the hotel.

Enjoy two nights at The Lugger, with dinner on the first night and breakfast each morning, along with tickets to visit the Lost Gardens of Heligan, from just £151.50 per night.
