The mix of modern dialogue, audience involvement, traditional festive songs and cheer, and of course delivery by an incredibly talented cast and crew, brings a revered classic to life
Back in the summer, we enjoyed Split Second Production’s portrayal of Shakespeare’s ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ and were delighted to be invited back to enjoy their spin on the Charles Dickens’ classic ‘A Christmas Carol.’
The production took place within the beautifully lavish grandeur of Berkeley Castle’s Grand Hall, with the stonework and tapestries all lit up by candlelight, and it felt like the ideal setting for this much-loved festive tale.
We are all well-versed in the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, a grumpy sort who dislikes Christmas, and much to the dismay of his long-suffering clerk Bob Cratchit and disappointed nephew Fred, he will not be persuaded to enjoy the festivities. During Christmas Eve night he’s visited by three ghosts who try to convince him that he can change his ways, to avoid facing the similar fate of his deceased business partner who is cursed to walk the Earth burdened by chains.
Whoever you are, and however you celebrate, Christmas is a time when you can simply enjoy the pleasures of being with loved ones. ‘A Christmas Carol’ embodies this sentiment, and Split Second Productions deliver the message beautifully through their contemporary adaptation.
The performance by Split Second Productions follows the story through with just five talented actors who also showcase impressive instrument skills on the violin, mandolin, flute and guitar. Half-full glass tumblers are even made use of; creating a beautifully eerie sound in the poignant moments of Scrooge’s path to redemption.
Charles Dickens’ ‘A Christmas Carol’ has been entertaining audiences for years, and it was delightful to see an audience of children, the elderly and everyone in between enjoying The Split Second Productions’ portrayal.
The mix of modern dialogue, audience involvement, traditional festive songs and cheer, and of course delivery by the incredibly talented cast and crew, brought a revered classic to life. And, confidently speaking for the audience, kicked off the festivities for all.
