There are short stories, and then there are stories so short you can fit them on the back of a postcard.

Settle Stories, a growing arts and heritage charity based in Settle Town Hall, believes everyone has a story to tell, which is why it is inviting people to send in their own mini tales for its annual Stories on a Postcard exhibition.

‘This is a chance for people to delve into their imagination, tell a true tale or simply make one up,’ explained Sita Brand, director of Settle Stories. ‘People can write about anything, from sorcerers to spaceships, gingerbread men to gangsters, the only rule is it has to be on the back of a postcard.’

The charity has teamed up with Katha Kosa, a storytelling organisation in India, for the second year running. After the exhibition in North Yorkshire, the postcards will be flown over to Mumbai to be displayed in a famous bookshop.

This is the fifth year of Stories on a Postcard and plans have been put in place to ensure it’s the most popular yet. It’s going to be held at Settle Train Station as part of Settle Storytelling Festival, which runs from October 10th-12th, with postcards on every wall.

Every child at Settle Primary School is creating a postcard to exhibit in a bid to top last year’s success when a whopping 2,000 postcards were received.

‘This year we’re hoping the exhibition will be bigger than ever before,’ said Sita. ‘Many local groups within Craven and Yorkshire have been invited to take part, as have schools within an hour’s radius of Settle.

‘We’re delighted to produce this fifth exhibition of stories which show off the creative talents of Yorkshire and beyond. We look forward to reading the stories of all our visitors too.’

Settle Stories was established in 2010 to share stories in all their myriad forms. Its work brings the world to the idyllic market town to provoke, inspire and broaden horizons. It produces the largest annual Storytelling Festival in the north of England, runs a learning programme featuring workshops and online storytelling activities and also preserves the vivid oral histories of Yorkshire through the WR Mitchell Archive.

If you have a postcard you’d like to share, please send it to Settle Stories, Town Hall, Settle, BD24 9EJ by September 15th with your name and email address on the back. For more information, visit settlestories.org.uk.
