Unmarried sisters in their fifties share a London flat. Nina is brisk, dynamic and gainfully employed. Nancy is plump, self-conscious and suddenly redundant. Urged to find a hobby, she unwittingly stumbles into a job modelling for eccentric drawing students and their philandering teacher. At first Nancy is horrified to discover that life models pose naked, but when she embraces the idea she is unexpectedly liberated by the experience.

She keeps this artistic activity a secret from her sister as her life changes.

When Nina discovers what he sister has been up to she is shocked; her sister’s newfound confidence unsettles Nina and they move toward an inevitable confrontation as Nina faces her unhappy past and Nancy glimpses a possible future as she enjoys being part of the art group.

Sitting Pretty is beautifully crafted by Amy Rosenthal, daughter of Jack Rosenthal and Maureen Lipman. The story encompasses the preoccupations of youth and middle age with a gentle blend of wit and pathos.

A bittersweet play unfolds with humorous twists and turns.

Hazel Burrows directs the piece for The Maskers Theatre Company – her directing debut at The Nuffield Theatre, Southampton
