Lured to the bright lights of London for a special celebration, Nick Roberts uncovers a luxury hotel in the capital that the whole family can enjoy

For so many of us across the county, the lure of London is quite a pull. Not perhaps to live — why would we give up the gorgeous countryside we can so enjoy in Essex? — but for those vibrant city lights that offer so much in the sense of various entertainment, excellent cuisine and so much history.

Celebrating family occasions with a trip to the capital for a special treat has long been a tradition for me and so when I was given the chance to stay at The London EDITION, located in Fitzrovia on the edge of London’s Soho neighbourhood, it provided a great opportunity to treat our four-year-old son to a weekend to remember.

After a busy day exploring the Natural History Museum and with a trip to The London Transport Museum planned for the following day, a Saturday night stop-over at The London EDITION was just perfect, both for mum and dad and our two boys.

The hotel offers a special holiday package, which includes accommodation in a spacious Loft or Loft Suite, a complimentary connecting room and Big Kid, Little Kid treats including breakfast for two, a kid’s city guide, a free evening movie and a London-inspired in-room tent.

While mum and dad kicked of our shoes from those aching feet, the boys collapsed into bed with their parcel of treats and freshly-made popcorn and selected their Disney classic on the 46” flat screen HDTV to end an incredible day and one they will remember for a very long time.

With bedtime done with, the adults have the chance to savour more of the hotel’s delights. The London EDITION aims to blend groundbreaking innovation, great design, outstanding dining and entertainment with personal, friendly, modern service — and we were not left disappointed. This luxury boutique hotel preserves the finest aspects of an iconic landmark building, but reinvents the space within to create a dynamic fusion of both past and present.

This five star hotel has 173 unique guest rooms and suites, while the hotel’s main restaurant, Berners Tavern, sees Michelin-starred executive chef Jason Atherton put a twist on traditional British cuisine with a restaurant menu entirely sourced in the UK. This stunning restaurant is now one of the city’s most sought-after reservations, and as an all-day dining restaurant you can enjoy tea, late supper and a popular Sunday brunch. The hotel’s Lobby Bar is also one of London’s hottest destinations with eclectic art and iconic British and European design intertwined at the Lobby Bar. A stainless steel orb, designed by Ingo Maurer, hangs from the grand ceiling and allows a discreet glimpse of all the action as you sample cocktails, conceived by the talented Davide Segat, such as the signature EDITION Shrub to the Smashing Pair of Melons.

Suddenly, with this slice of luxury, this is a birthday treat that everyone is able to really make the most of.
