Stone carver Teucer Wilson has been creating sculptures, signs, memorials, panels, and plaques from his workshop in Burgh-next-Aylsham for the past 12 years. This summer he is holding his first solo exhibition. Engrained Voices, is a collaboration with renowned Norfolk storyteller Hugh Lupton, who will be launching his latest book, Norfolk Folk Tales, at the exhibition. Teucer specialises in letter cutting and the exhibition pairs his distinctive carvings with traditional Norfolk tales.

“I thought I’d like to do something with a local resonance, something rooted in the area,” explains Teucer. “I got the idea of using the words in local stories. I think what I like about these versions of the stories is the dialect. My carvings are only excerpts of the stories, but they give a good flavour of the language.” They also range from the style of Roman inscriptions to modern calligraphy, and illustrate stories of treasure buried beneath Norfolk hills, hidden tunnels and a ghostly drowned drummer boy.

Engrained Voices runs from May 25 to June 9 at Salthouse Church, and includes two evenings of storytelling for adults and over 12s, on Friday, May 31 and Friday, June 7.
