Name of club: The Surrey Guild of Craftsmen Location: The Surrey Guild Craft Gallery at Milford, 1 Moushill Lane, Milford GU8 5BHIn a nutshell: The guild represents makers from different disciplines who share a passion for design creation, leading to the making and sale of unique hand-made items. Name of person interviewed: Polly SwainRole in group: Press secretary Member of club for: Two yearsWhy did you join? ‘To benefit from the support of other like-minded people.’
When was the club set up? About 25 years ago.
How many members do you have? Currently, the guild has a membership of 65 and, of these, 45 help to run The Surrey Guild Craft Gallery at Milford on a co-operative basis.
Where and when do you meet? We hold regular committee meetings. Additionally, we see each other at the gallery when on duty, as well as at various exhibitions and fairs.
What’s the best thing about being a member of the club? Meeting members of the public who visit the shop at the gallery. This provides them with the opportunity to speak directly to the makers and to glean an insight into the world of the craftsman, which in turn often results in the commissioning of new work.

Do you find being surrounded by other like-minded individuals is inspiring? The support offered by being with like-minded people is not only inspirational but also comforting; sometimes just knowing that someone else has experienced a similar situation really helps.
Have you got links with other clubs too?Yes! Many members belong to other discipline-related groups, such as The Embroiderers Guild, the Quilters Guild, the Society of Designer Craftsmen, the Jewellery & Silversmithing Network, various art textile groups and organisations such as the Kaleidoscope Group.
What’s the most interesting story you can tell us from the group’s history? The gallery started in 1993 as a cooperative, and is still going strong – nearly 18 years later!
…and the funniest? In the Yellow Pages, the guild is listed under ‘Craft Shops’, which means frequent calls requesting supplies; ironic as we supply the end product!
When is your next event that is open to the public/potential new members? The Guild is always open to new members who can apply at any time. Details of how to apply are on our website. Applications are assessed at the committee meetings, which are held approximately every two months. Also, the gallery at Milford is open to the public every day of the year except Christmas and New Year’s from 10.30am to 5pm.
Describe your club to us in five words...A treasure trove of excellence.
