Rebecca Underwood reveals some of the magic of Munich and explores some of the best places to stay and eat to make the most of this city break
For a taste of Bavarian hospitality consider the captivating city of Munich. Visit the Hofbräuhaus, an inn dating back to 1589 when Duke Wilhelm V founded a royal brewery. In 1828 King Ludwig I declared by decree that the royal beer hall would be open to the public and he remains the toast of the town. Savour the atmosphere as the brass band entices the diners to sing, dance and be merry. The Bavarian dishes are very popular and a glass of Hofbräu beer is ideal for raising a toast to King Ludwig I.
For the perfect place to stay, the Mandarin Oriental, on Neuturmstrasse, provides the highest standards of service and comfort. This Neo-Renaissance property, built in 1880, was once Munich’s opera house. The lavish suites are stylishly furnished with marbled bathrooms, and extras include a complimentary mini bar, should you fancy a late night tipple. For those who like to take things easy, head for the China Moon Roof Terrace and take a leisurely lap in the outdoor heated swimming pool. Should you feel a little peckish, Mark’s, the hotel’s Michelin starred restaurant, presents a superior dining experience and an excellent wine menu.
For a more casual affair, visit Bar Centrale on Ledererstrasse. This buzzing restaurant is very popular with Munich’s Italian community and those ‘in the know’. The homemade pasta is exceptional and you won’t find a frothier cappuccino.
Stroll around Marienplatz and view the neo-Gothic New Town Hall. Note the eye-catching gargoyles, imposing statues and a fierce-looking dragon scurrying up the towering turrets. The glockenspiel entertains the crowds at 11am and 12pm and also at 5pm from March to October.
For a delicious lunch, the Kuffler Restaurant, Bar and Grill, on Hofgraben, presents an enticing menu including grilled braised cattle ribs and vegetables with a tasty BBQ sauce and with a glass of 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Hess Select it’s an outstanding dish, served with aplomb.
For a truly tranquil retreat consider the Charles Hotel on Sophienstrasse, opposite the Old Botanical Garden. This luxurious hotel offers guests first class accommodation and service. Relax in a spacious executive suite, which features a stylishly furnished lounge, a large bathroom with a walk-in shower and an elegant bedroom with a king size bed adorned with plump pillows and crisp linens. For a wonderful dining experience visit Davvero on the ground floor. The service is outstanding, the menu is inspired and there’s an impressive wine cellar. And visit Brasserie OskarMaria at the Literaturhaus on Salvatorplatz. Dine al fresco and indulge in a spot of ‘people watching’. The service is great and the ox tartar, served with a fried quail’s egg is delicious. Sample a glass or two of the 2009 Montessue Isola dei Nuraghi and savour the moment.
