It’s that time of year to join Cornwall Wildlife Trust as they return to the stunning Trebah Garden for their annual Wildlife Celebration. The trust have been protecting our precious wildlife and wild places for more than half a century now and this spectacular two-day event is a show case of all the vital work carried out by its dedicated staff and volunteers. With a host of inspiring activities and a chance to get up close to some of Cornwall’s more elusive wildlife there will be something for all ages to enjoy.
Trebah Garden is a long-term and valued supporter of the Cornwall Wildlife Trust. Rated as one of the top 80 gardens in the world, it will be at its colourful best in time for the event and is a magnet for local wildlife. In spring, it is alive with an outstanding array of 100-year-old rhododendrons, magnolias and camellias. With nature walks and rockpool rambles on Trebah’s own secluded beach, this magical Cornish garden with more than four miles of footpath will be used to its fullest.
For many, the highlight of the weekend is the chance get close to an array of fascinating Cornish wildlife. Gwel An Mor’s Feadon Farm Wildlife Centre will give visitors the chance to meet and learn all about owls, buzzards and hawks as well as mice and even snakes! There will also be the chance to see Trebah’s wild birds up close with the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) as they check for new life in the garden’s many nest boxes and give live bird ringing demonstrations.
In a quiet corner Cornwall Bat Group will provide a rare chance to see these elusive nocturnal creatures and share their important rescue work whilst insects galore can be seen in fascinating detail with the Kernow Microscopical Society. The trust’s Living Landscapes conservation team will be on hand to share the wonders of Cornish pond life.
For those with a passion for all things marine, the trust’s Living Seas team will be on hand to talk about their exciting marine conservation work know as well as running rock pool rambles and beach art games on Polgwidden Cove. Join them and be enchanted by the wealth of wonderful creatures that call our shore line and seas home. Trebah is at the mouth of the Helford, and the Helford Marine Conservation Group will be there to explain how visitors can help protect this very special estuary and its inhabitants, and Cornwall Seal Group can tell you all you ever wanted to know about Cornish seals.
Fox Club, the trust’s junior membership will be running a host of fun and creative wildlife inspired ArtRageous activities. The Nature Reserves team will also be helping visitors build their very homes for wildlife. You can also learn about the trust’s 57 nature reserves and the work it does to make sure they are havens for Cornwall’s rare and endangered wildlife.
The Environmental Records Centre for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly (ERCCIS) and the Trust’s Wildlife Information Service (WIS) will be there to help with any wildlife questions. From how to attract birds to your garden to the best way to look after your wildlife pond, they have all the answers. They will also demonstrate how to record the wildlife you see when out and about so the information can be used for wildlife research, which in turn feeds into the trust’s conservation work.
