Embrace the cold, wrap up warm and enjoy one of our favourite walks in Kent arm in arm with your favourite person this month

A wildlife walk

Sandwich & Pegwell Bay, nr Ramsgate

The fabulous National Nature Reserve here provides a habitat for birds and now is the best time to see them. During the winter months, thousands of waders, including dunlins, grey plovers and sanderlings, flock. Look up to see birds of prey, such as peregrine falcons and merlins, soaring the skies.

Sandwich and Pegwell Bay (CT12 5JB) is a mixture of ancient dune pasture, mudflats, saltmarsh, shingle beaches, coastal scrub and chalk cliffs, interspersed with paths for both long and short walks, some with wheelchair access.

If you want to do a lengthy stroll, head out of the reserve onto the Saxon Shore Way; you can walk along the coast for six miles to Ramsgate (download a walk leaflet at kent.gov.uk).

REFUEL: The Belle Vue Tavern (thebellevuetavern.co.uk, CT11 0NJ) has great views and serves traditional pub food, as well as fish and chips, curry and mussels with chips.
