The walk

From Godstone Green, go down the lane between the White Hart Inn and Coughlans Artisan Bakers. Go past the village hall and through a barrier onto a tarmac path that passes Bay Pond on your left.

When you reach St Nicholas Church, go through the churchyard keeping to the right of the church on the tarmac path, continuing downhill onto a woodland path. Cross over two small bridges, then turn right by the fence. Turn left and follow the path up the hill and across a small field until you reach another field. Turn right along the edge of this field and in 150 metres, the path veers right to meet a driveway. Turn left and follow the path around the wall of Leigh Place. Go beside an electric gate to three way sign post. Go right and pass another pond. Ignore the footpath after the pond. Continue ahead between the fences. At the end of the path keep right on the tarmac drive until you reach a road. Turn right along this road.

Continue past Hythe Cottage and then after 250 metres turn left up Enterdent Lane. Go through a wooden barrier uphill into woodland. As the path bears right, ignore the footpath to the left and continue uphill. Keep going up this steep incline, crossing over a bridleway. At the top of the hill you will be rewarded with a spectacular view back towards Godstone. Continue on this path, ignoring a path to your left, until you reach a road. Turn left, but be careful as there is no footpath here. Continue over the brow of the hill for 100 metres.

At the driveway on your left marked Brakey Hill, turn right onto a bridleway marked as part of the Greensand Way. Continue on this route for some time, following the GW signposts. Avoid a gate to your left by forking right on a narrower path, going past a talk leylandii hedge. Views of the South Downs can be enjoyed to your right. Eventually you come to a carved bench with ‘K’ on it, before coming to a junction where a footpath marked with a yellow arrow goes straight ahead through a field. Ignore this path and instead, turn right, on the Greensand Way (marked with a blue arrow) and then immediately left. Soon you will have sight of a pretty black and white timbered house to your left. A footpath joins you from the left at a fingerpost. Keep going until you reach a road. Turn right up this steep hill until you come to a junction with Snatts Hill and Rabies Heath.

Cross the road and go straight onto the path opposite. Go over a stile into a field and continue ahead. Ignore a footpath forking left into trees and continue downhill to the left side of the field. From here you will spot the green-topped spire of the old stable block at Garston Park- keep going towards it. At the bottom of the hill, go over the stile onto a path between fences. When you meet the tarmac drive for Garston Park, keep straight ahead on the drive going downhill.

After passing the buildings to your right, the tarmac drive forks in front of a wide grassy area. Take the left fork to the end of the driveway, through a large wooden kissing gate, and turn right onto Mill Lane. When the lane bears left there is a footpath on the left running above the lane. It re-joins the lane as you enter Godstone. Continue ahead past some houses, and the village school before you arrive at the green again, but on the far side. Turn right along the edge of the green to return to The White Hart, where the walk began.
