Lytham won the war with barely a shot fired. More than 30,000 visitors invaded the town and swiftly surrendered to its charms.
Coming so soon after the smash-hit Proms, the 1940s Weekend showed once again that this little coastal community knows how to party.
The weekend organiser, Vivien Wood, tourism officer for Lytham St Annes, said: ‘When I arrived in my office the following Monday morning I was already getting messages from people wanting to know the dates for next year.
‘The weather on the Sunday was a little challenging but it still turned out to be an excellent event and leading lights in the business community thought it was fantastic. One café owner told me the Saturday had been their busiest day for 13 years. ‘If the attractions of Lytham St Annes ever were a well-kept secret, the word is certainly out now.’ Next year’s 1940s weekend is scheduled for August 15 and 16.
