Chatsworth’s weekend festival of art returns from 21st to 23rd September with talks by pre-eminent artists, curators, collectors and writers
In a year that has seen Chatsworth restored to its full glory following the 10-year renovation programme, an appreciation of architecture and design has been woven through this fourth festival. The Duke and Duchess of Devonshire will be joined by the specialist conservation architect who directed the works and the curator of the current exhibition ‘Chatsworth Renewed: the house, past, present and future’ in a talk on the second day of the festival. Also on the list of speakers is John Pawson, an architect famous for his minimalist aesthetic, and one of the UK’s leading female architects Amanda Levete. Author Kate Hubbard and artist Ed Kluz take a more historical view with a look at Bess of Hardwick’s houses, Trevor Osborne and James Berresford discuss the history of Buxton Crescent and historian Dan Cruickshank talks about his recent journey through Syria. There will also be five short talks about architecture by students as part of the Derbyshire Educational Trust programme.
The art aspect is catered for with talks from, amongst others, 2017 Turner Prize winner Lubaina Himid, Chatsworth’s first artist-in-residence Linder Sterling and leading British artist Idris Khan.
Gardens – as well as Education and Family – are another ongoing theme, with gardening writer Anna Pavord discussing the art of ‘marshalling nature’.
Ticket holders can take advantage of the magical venue on the South Lawn to visit Chatsworth’s Garden and enjoy the autumn sculpture exhibition which will focus on the Estate’s own sculpture.
