A look ahead to the 2014 Nantwich Show

The Nantwich Show is one of the highlights of the summer and this year’s event has much to tempt visitors

Visitors to the Nantwich Show will find even more to enjoy and organisers are hoping this year’s event will be another record breaker. The one-day farming extravaganza will feature animal displays, shopping and spectacular shows in the main show ring.

The countryside pursuits section will be bigger than ever, with more displays and exhibitions than in previous years and there will be over 400 trade stands in the town and country shopping pavilion, selling everything from clothes to cars.

And alongside the best of the county’s arts, crafts and floral displays will be cookery demonstrations from star names including James Martin, Will Holland and Jonathan Harrison.

Among the new attractions at this year’s event, which will be held on July 30 in the 100 acre showground at Dorfold Park, will be a display of vintage vehicles and machinery which will be quite a contrast to the jaw-dropping motorcycle stunts performed by former world champion moto-cross rider Jason Smyth.

For many, the highlight is the animal section, where all creatures great and small will once again take starring roles in the main show ring. There will be sections for sheep and poultry and classes for pigeons, but the larger animals often steal the show and this year there are expected to be more than 500 cattle on show.

The scale of the International Cheese Awards is breath-taking. The largest cheese show in the world last year attracted a world record 4,286 entries from 26 countries and that number could be beaten this year. Celebrity chef James Martin will once again demonstrate his talents, as well as other culinary stars, including former Coronation Street actor Sean Wilson.

Show secretary Adrian Lawrence said: ‘The cheese show is a wonderful event which continues to go from strength to strength. I’ve had entries from Canada, America and Australia so we’re looking forward to another truly international occasion. The weather last year was poor but we still had 29,500 visitors so if the sun is shining we’re expecting something like 35,000 people to come along. We have made some tweaks to the showground since last year to try to improve things. We have new attractions such as the vintage vehicles which we think will be of great interest, and we have made the showground nice and compact.’
